Millbrook's Archers

Gloucester Schools Sports Partnership offered the opportunity for schools to have some free Archery coaching of which we were selected. Students were chosen from year 10 and 11 to experience this, and we were lucky to have Chloe Tucker, an experienced archer amongst the group to support as with gaining the skills required to go into the shoot off with Barnwood Park and Gloucester Academy.

Over the 6 weeks students got to grips with the technique and skill required to hit the gold target and the high points. They committed to lunchtimes and showed a great determination to do well. The shoot off saw a very reduced team compete to get the highest average score to be compared against Gloucester Academy and Barnwood. Some excellent shooting from Lewis Fogg, Rachel Robinson and Keaton Pearce helped our overall score to remain high.

The score came in on the following and final week of the sessions – we had won and were going to the Gloucestershire School Games as the team representing Gloucester. A very proud moment, and would allow a different level of competition – particularly as it would be outdoors, something we would not be used to.

On Saturday 15th June we travelled to a very wet, windy Hartpury and into a situation we were unfamiliar with. A number of other competing regions had many talented archers, and this would be the mental aspect our team would need to overcome. With some talking to from Chloe and Paige Tucker, they settled into the warm up, and experienced just how different the shooting conditions would be.

Our first detail saw us finish second, but with a lack of concentration and nerves, our place began to fall to 5th. We headed into the bronze medal match on a fresh start, but the lack of an archer meant we could only manage 5th again.

A great day with some fantastic students.

Well done to Rachel Robinson, Cheyanne Jones, Ryan West, Jack Holmes, Michaela Barry and a big well done and thank you to Chloe Tucker, Paige Tucker and Sophie Tucker (honoury Millbrook student for the day).

Chloe and Paige were also competing in the individual recurve competition. This meant that they had to shoot at a much smaller target. Chloe scored a total of 201 from 12 arrows and finished 3rd and Paige scored 95 and 15th. Well done girls, it was a pleasure to see you in action.
