The cast of Millbrook Academy’s forthcoming production of Les Miserables were lucky enough to be visited by a West End star at their rehearsal this weekend.

Craig Mather, who played the leading role of Marius in the West End production ran a workshop with the Academy cast on Sunday. He worked with the cast for a total of three hours, helping them with both acting and singing, and developing their performances in two of the pivotal scenes from the show. He used some interesting techniques, which saw students pushing against the walls of The Mill whilst singing to help them understand the way the characters are feeling.

He also let us in on one or two West End secrets – including that the men in Les Miserables can be found doing press ups and star jumps just before coming on stage to ensure that they feel pumped up for the opening number!

After working on some of the larger scenes, Craig then worked with some of the soloists, giving hints and tips about how best to perform some of the show’s most familiar songs. We are very grateful to Craig for giving up his Sunday for us – he is currently touring the UK with the musical “Tonight’s The Night”, and came from Manchester to work with the cast. Whilst everyone was exhausted by the end of the workshop, it was an invaluable experience for all involved.
