Ski Trip Easter 2012
Setting off from school at 2:00am may not sound like much fun, but when you are heading to the Alps for a week of skiing it makes it more bearable. After a long drive to Gatwick, one lost passport, a flight to Zurich and two trains we eventually arrived at the Mountain Lodge Arosa – East Switzerland.
After a being kitted out with our skis, poles and helmets we set off for our first day of ski lessons on Easter Sunday. The majority of the group started off on the nursery slopes, with shouts of “Snow Plough, Pizza, Big Turns” coming from our foreign instructors. The more able skiers in the group, Harri Pitt, Aiden Bonehill and Connor Sharples, headed straight up the mountain to get to grips with some more challenging runs. After a couple of days learning the basics, all of group made great progress and by day three were all heading to the higher runs.
The accommodation at the lodge was basic but comfortable, we were in rooms in groups of 2 or 3, and many of the rooms had fantastic views over the mountain. The breakfast was a combination of cereals, toast, hot chocolate, coffee, cheese and ham – continental or what! At the end of the day we were filled up with spaghetti bolognaise, burger ‘n’ chips, roast pork and a selection of tasty desserts each night.
In the evening we had several different activities to keep us entertained, bingo was competitive with prizes up for grabs, ice skating proved easy for some but more difficult for others, the quiz created a fair a bit of tension, the disco saw us poppin’ and lockin’ all night (that was just the staff)!
By the end of the week the skiing had seen us all make great strides from day one on the nursery slopes, and as we moved further up the mountain the views became even more breathtaking.
Overall we had a fantastic week, great snow, a bit of winter sun, good company and fun packed days from morning until night. A big thank you to the staff who took us (Mr Wintle, Miss Cantwell and Miss Payne). A great trip I would definitely recommend to my friends.
