Parent Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA)

Many parents will be aware that at Millbrook Academy, we work hard to ensure that the students have a say in the running of their academy. Our Student Council is an active and significant part of the decision-making, and are taking an ever-more active role, alongside staff, in shaping and leading the academy.

However, we believe that success is built on a triangle between the students; the academy; and parents/carers. We are, therefore, keen to start involving parents more in our discussions about how we continue to move the academy forward. This led to the PTFA being founded, with the intention of inviting parents to attend the academy on a set date, and talk to us about what we are doing in the academy, and how we can make it better. Millbrook Academy PTFA is made up of parents, teachers, students, ex-governors adn ex-pupils who meet once a term to discuss ways of raising much needed funds for the Academy.

This money is used to help fund many important school items. e.g. insuring and taxing the school mini bus, providing materials for decorating and gardening to improve the Academy environment and also to contribute towards gift vouchers for the Celebration of Achievement evening.

We also provide Broc grants to individuals/groups to extend activities out of school. We achieve this by organising fund raising events during the year, which include fun quiz nights, car treasure hunts, craft and table top sales and providing refreshemtns at school events.

We are keen that PTFA is a two-way communication - the Leadership Team of the academy would like to be able to ask for parents' views on many different topics, but we also want to listen to your concerns and ideas, so the plans for the meetings will be guided by the group. However, possible future topics might include the development of new vocational courses, uniform, attendance policy, rewards and sanctions and indeed anything else to do with the life of the academy that you would like to discuss. I am currently considering having a meeting each term or so, but again, that will be for the group themselves to decide.
