What is Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium Grant (PPG) is a government initiative that gives schools and academies additional funding for students who:
  • have received a free school meal in the last 6 years (known as Ever 6)
  • are looked-after child
  • have a parent who serves or has served in the armed forces
The PPG for 2016-2017 is as follows:

Students in year 7-11 recorded as Ever 6 FSM£935
Looked after child (as defined by the Children Act 1989)£1900
Students who have been adopted, those with a special guardianship order, a child arrangements order or a residence order£1900
Service children£300

The government does not instruct schools and academies on how to spend PPG; they "are free to spend PPG as they see fit" (DfE 2011).  However, schools and academies must analyse the needs of their students and target spending so that all children, including those entitled to PPG, reach their full potential
