We are delighted to announce that Matt Alexander has been selected as a finalist in the Heart of Gloucestershire, Volunteer Hero Under 18 category. He has been invited to attend the awards ceremony on 22nd June at Cheltenham Racecourse along with the other finalists. Matt has worked hard to raise funds so that he can take part in the different projects abroad, run by Camps International.
Ian Mean, Editor-in-Chief of The Citizen, has invited the most talented English students from G15 schools to work on a new and exciting project. His vision is for students to work together to produce a feature inside The Citizen called The Young Citizen, which will include stories about young people written by young people.
Millbrook Academy was lucky enough to have Cliff Yates, the famous British poet, visit our school for four days as part of the G15 project. Cliff worked with small groups of Gifted and Talented students from Yr7-10 where students analysed specific poems selected for them and wrote their own.

Last term a group of year 9 art students had some portraiture work placed into an online gallery for a record-breaking public art attempt. Face Britain is a project that is aiming to break the Guinness World Record for Most artists working on the same installation and they asked children around Britain to contribute to their project by sending in self-portraits that they had created.
As the concern grows amongst Post 18 students about rising university tuition fees and the thought of being in years of debt, one school in Gloucestershire has come up with a creative way of helping those students, who do not want to go to university, to get a job.
Setting off from school at 2:00am may not sound like much fun, but when you are heading to the Alps for a week of skiing it makes it more bearable. After a long drive to Gatwick, one lost passport, a flight to Zurich and two trains we eventually arrived at the Mountain Lodge Arosa – East Switzerland.
We are delighted to announce that Mr Langworthy has been successful in attaining accredited School s Network Lead Practitioner status. This achievement has high level status, as it recognises that through Mr Langworthy’s hard work, expertise and skills he has had an impact on the outcomes of children and young people. We would like to congratulation Mr Langworthy on his achievement.
Matt Alexander, head boy at Millbrook Academy is jetting off to Borneo as part of the World Challenge initiative. He will be working with orang-utans to help in their rehabilitation and eventually their release back into their natural environment. Matt has had to raise money to fund his trip through Camps International, but his is not the first trip Matt has done. In 2010 he went to Kenya for a month.
As one of the UK’s biggest fundraising events, Sport Relief brings the nation together to get active, raise cash and change lives. All the money raised helps people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries. Well done to everyone at Millbrook Academy who raised funds for this very worthy charity.
Millbrook Academy hosted a talk from a member of the House of Lords on Friday 24th February to encourage students to engage more with the political and parliamentary process. Lord Tyler met with year 11 Citizenship students for an hour to talk about the work and role of the House of Lords.
Molly Danks and Tessa Thomas, Millbrook Academy's representatives for G15 were amongst students who Ian Mean, editor-in-chief of Gloucestershire Media, described as 'inspiring' in an article this week.
We would like to wish Miss Ogun (P.E. Dept) good luck in her quest to win gold in the hammer throwing event at the All Nigeria National Championships and also in the Olympic trials in June.
On Monday 12th and Wednesday 14th March we will be holding a dance competition in aid of Sports Relief.
This year we had 7 students enter the Gloucestershire’s Young Photographer competition and one of our students, Holly Harvey, was lucky enough to have her photograph selected for the exhibition. Unfortunately, we didn’t get placed in the competition, but Holly’s photograph of a Hoverfly was very well received by the judges.
Over the past few months it has been reported in the press how young people have been hit hardest by the economic downturn. Statistics show that young people are finding it extremely hard to get work.
Year 9 student, Ryan West, has earned the chance to compete at the Olympic Selection trials. Ryan has swum qualifying times which will see him competing in the new Olympic Pool in March, against the best swimmers in the UK.
