Physical Education Gifted and Talented meet Olympic Bronze medallist
Mr Stuart Langworthy recently received The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion from Vince Cable, Business Secretary. This Award for individuals: The Queen’s Award for Enterprise Promotion has the objective to encourage and reward outstanding achievement by UK based individuals.
Principal, Jan Scott, recently attend the Gloucestershire Olympians’ Dinner, which was held on 9th November 2012 at Cheltenham Race Course. The dinner was to raise funds for the Gloucester Boathouse Ltd.
Congratulations to all who participated in the Children In Need fundraising on Friday. The students raised a fabulous £791.81.
On Friday 16th November we are raising funds for Children In Need.
Students have been raising funds for Children in Need this week by running a very successful tuck shop!
It’s not every day a Turner Prize nominated artist visits the Academy, but that’s what happened at Millbrook! Richard Billingham, a rising star of the photographic world, came to the Academy, chatted with art and design students about his career.
Millbrook Academy was one of six Gloucestershire secondary schools chosen by The Everyman Theatre to take part in a performance project to commemorate the bicentenary of Charles Dickens’s birth. Each school developed a 15 minute adaptation of one of Dickens’ novels – ours was “David Copperfield”.
On Tuesday 16th October the Millbrook Academy Cross Country team were in action at the annual district championships at Plock Court. It was a challenging afternoon for running with heavy ground and high winds but this did not stop our students performing exceptionally well.
As part of Millbrook Academies Sky Sports Living for Sport Scheme, former South African international and Gloucester rugby player Thinus Delport visited the school this Wednesday. The former Springbok worked with students throughout the day, inspiring them with his own personal story; from small town farming community to playing on the international stage in front of 80,000 spectators.
Millbrook Academy has secured a £6.5K grant from The Foyle Foundation to purchase new books for the Library. The new books will aid the ongoing development and improvement of the Library at Millbrook. The Foyle Foundation is an independent grantmaking trust that distributes grants to UK charities.
Science is alive and kicking in our new super lab!
The Year 10 Boys football team progressed in to the second round of the ESFA National Cup with a 5-2 win over John Masefield School from Ledbury.
With the national pass rate of GCSE Science plummeting by a worrying 2.2%, it has become imperative to boost the interest of the subject from a younger age. But, with ever-changing trends and distractions for young pupils, be that video games, music, sport or whatever else they put their minds to, it is difficult to capture their attention.
A fantastic evening was had by one and all. The prom for the current year 11 was well attended at the Hallmark Hotel Matson. Students and staff enjoyed a pleasant evening together dancing the night away.
This is a superb award winning experience for Year 12 students studying Business Studies a Level and BTEC Travel.
All Year 10 students have just completed a fantastic week at work.
On 22nd June I was very privileged to have been invited to a service in Gloucester Cathedral to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. I was there representing Girlguiding Gloucestershire as Joint County Commissioner and we were accompanied by 2 Guides and 2 young Guiders from the County.
On Sunday 24th June, four students from Millbrook Academy took part in the Cheltenham Circular Challenge in order to raise money for Global Footsteps. The participants were Year 7s Jay Price, Max Hopkins and David Donnelly, and Tom Hemmins from Year 8.
Ben Davies, a year 10 student at Millbrook Academy, was lucky enough to interview the Secretary for Education, Michael Gove, on 21stJune at Gloucester Media Centre, along with four other students from schools around Gloucestershire. The interview was set to take place via Skype and was organised by Ian Mean, Editor in Chief of The Citizen.
Millbrook Academy book club, a.k.a. Carnegie club, is an educational get-together in which students read books of all genres and then write reviews to post online for others to read. Carnegie club meetings are held every Wednesday afternoon where we share our opinions and views on the book we have chosen to read.
On 13th June, 28 students from Millbrook Academy were given the chance to work with a BBC film-crew and writer and broadcaster David Goldblatt at The Watershed in Bristol.
The G15 Celebration of Success evening was held in Gloucester Cathedral on Thursday 21stJune 2011 and was described by the Lord Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, Dame Janet Trotter, as being ‘A magnificent event! A fabulous way of showcasing the talents of all Gloucester City’s pupils’.
In April 2012, Ian Mean, Editor in Chief of The Citizen, together with Maeve Maxwell, G15 Partnership Manager, set out to produce a copy of the Young Citizen.
